Princes William and Harry shoot wild boar on hunting trip to Spain

JUST days before launching a campaign to highlight poaching and the illegal wildlife trade Prince William, accompanied by Prince Harry, has jetted into Spain for a hunting trip.

The royal brothers are staying at a luxury hunting lodge on the country estate near Cordoba – owned by the Duke of Westminster – one of the richest men in Britain.

The pair shot wild boar and stags at the exclusive 37,000-hectare property Finca La Garganta, near the village of Conquista, on the border of Castilla La Mancha.
Contained within the 40 mile perimeter – patrolled by armed guards in 4x4s – the Finca has its own private train station, petrol station and accommodation for 100 staff.
The brothers try to go shooting at least once a year on the estate owned by the Duke of Westminster, who is William’s godfather.

According to reports, William and Harry separately flew into Sevilla on Thursday before leaving for the estate with friends and some Scotland Yard protection officers.
It is understood that the Duchess of Cambridge, and their son, Prince George, are at home in the UK.
Princes William and Harry are no strangers to Andalucia having visited the region on several occasions in recent years.

The brothers have visited the estate in the past, with the Duke of Cornwall believed to have visited with his then girlfriend Kate Middleton, a couple of years ago.
A Kensington Palace spokesman last night declined to talk about the trip.

Belgian 'cross team takes mid-season break in Spain
With no cyclo-cross races in Belgium or the Netherlands this coming weekend, the stars of the European cyclo-cross circuit have opted to head south to warmer climes for training camps commencing earlier this week and running through the latter portion of next week. While the Telenet-Fidea squad opted for the Mediterranean island of Mallorca, rival team Sunweb-Napoleon Games chose the coastal city of Calpe, Spain as their destination for a mid-season break.
"This is mostly a program of long-distance training on the road, but I will also include a few sessions in the woods," said Subweb-Napoleon Games team manager Mario De Clercq.
"This break comes just in time for many of our riders. Klaas Vantornout was looking forward to it, he even left a day earlier for Calpe. For Kevin Pauwels it is good that he can go someplace away from the stress. Gianni Vermeersch has been missing his explosiveness in recent 'cross races while Jim Aernouts still needs to build his base after his broken leg."
In addition to current team members, three of the squad's new signees for 2014 are also in attendance at the camp: Michael and Dieter Vanthourenhout plus Dominique Cornu.
The team will spend 10 days in Calpe, Spain and return home to Belgium next Thursday. Sunweb-Napoleon Games riders return to racing on Saturday, December 7, at the C1-rated Scheldecross race in Antwerp, Belgium.

CHANGE TRAINS FOR A QUICKER JOURNEY

According to the latest timetable information released by Spanish train operator RENFE, the only direct service from Alicante to France will be withdrawn from the 15th of December.

However, despite the reduction in the long distance service, the journey will take less time, generally, and be cheaper, although timetables and prices are of course subject to change and availability.
Leaving on Monday the 11th of December, the 11:09 departure from Alicante to Montpellier will arrive over 10 hours later, at 21:14, at a single ticket price of 100 euro. However, leaving a week later, on the 17th, the 11:09 departure means a change of trains, but your journey will end in Montpellier at 20:21, taking just over 9 hours, arriving an hour earlier then the previous week. Not only that, the ticket price is also cheaper, working out at just 85 euro, one way.
If you want to travel from somewhere a little closer, your departure time from Orihuela will still be 10:01, arriving at the earlier time of 20:21, at just over 87 euro for your 10 hour and 20 minute journey, compared to 103 euro for the 11 hour and 13 minute journey of this week.
Meanwhile, RENFE have also announced changed to their onboard catering and premiere services for their high-speed train network. Their new “Preferente” ticket will feature a variety of travel benefits over the standard ticket price, such as use of the executive lounge, free parking and possibility to carry a pet, but the at seat meal element has been removed, resulting in a cheaper ticket than before.
Instead, food will be available from their new, “Cafetería Móvil”, or “trolley service” as we might call it, which will make its way along the train during the course of the journey. That also means that passenger in standard or economy seats will also be able to take advantage of the service, as, “Turista” and “Turista +” tickets will also be offered refreshments, as well as a buffet car on most services, all at the same price as before.

Day tripper! Five places to see on the Costa Blanca to experience the real Spain.

Not just a popular Beatles song, but a concept that is emerging amongst British holidaymakers. It is now so easy to take advantage of c

heap flights from the UK (to either Valencia or Alicante airports), cheap hotels or budget villa rentals in Benidorm and head further out to explore this amazing area.
There are various places along the Costa Blanca to whet anyone's appetite for virtually anything so here is a selected list of five places you really must see.

Things to see outside of Benidorm

If you are staying in the city during your trip, or not, it is well worth a good look around Benidorm at the sights, smells and sounds of a fascinating, awe inspiring and very quirky place, so much loved by the hordes of British tourists who come here each year, especially fans of the TV show "Benidorm".
Here is Mateo's bar, which is at the Sol Pelicanos hotel, near to Levante beach.
The city is by far the premier destination along this section of coast and boast the highest hotel in Europe (the gran hotel Bali) and also has the largest concentration of skyscrapers in Europe. Not satisfied with that accolade, Benidorm also has the largest concentration of skyscrapers per square metre outside of New York, which adds to the feel of a very cosmopolitan city.

Venture out of Benidorm and discover another world

1. Become closer to nature.
A short drive from Benidorm is the natural park of Serra Gelada (ice mountain) which is a rugged area on the coast, which rises more than 300 metres over Benidorm, Alfàs del Pì and Altea. This is an amazing place for many reasons: Tranquillity, nature, fresh air and the most amazing view that could be had anywhere in the whole of eastern Spain.
The mountain can be climbed on foot and takes around 2 hours but it is for very fit people!
The more "Normal" of us can take various journeys up the mountain by various means, and there is a even a service where a 4X4 Jeep takes visitors to the top and then they cycle back down, which has to be said, does not involve a great deal of pedal power!

2. Scare the hell out of the children.
No, not take them to a dungeon and leave them for the duration, however tempting, but a reference to the areas theme parks which are quite amazing, as good as anything you will find in the USA, and they cater for most tastes, although the thrill seekers get the golden egg on this occasion.
The main theme parks in the area are Terra Mitica, a sort of "around the world" themed park, Aqualandia, a crazy water slide themed park, Mundomar (which is basically a small version of Sea World), and Terra Natura, a wildlife themed park, all of which have been seen at some point in the Benidorm TV show.

3. Visit Calpe.
Calpe is a delightful seaside town which is dominated by a large rocky outcrop called the "penon de lfach" and is often likened to the rock of Gibraltar, although smaller in size.
The town is full of sleepy side streets, lazy tapas bars and 2 lovely churches which are well worth a visit for some quiet contemplation, or even just to escape the scorching summer sun!  These lovely old Spanish churches are worth a visit and are quite close to each other too. They are the Iglesia Antigua and the Iglesia de la Senora de las Nieves.
A visit to Calpe, a small, beautiful, quaint and traditional place steeped in History will be very much a highlight on anyone's holiday and visitors come back time and time again to soak up the real atmosphere.
4. Visit the city of Valencia!

If car hire and driving is not a problem whilst on holiday here, then venturing a bit further afield, the regional capital city of Valencia is about an hour and 40 minutes drive north from Benidorm and is a must see. There are many attractions too, and something for all the family, such as the quite astounding city of arts and sciences which encompasses a museum, opera house, 3d cinema and a massive aquarium.
5. Algar Waterfalls.
Lastly, a visit to the Costa Blanca could not really be marked as complete without a visit to the unspoilt beauty spot of the waterfalls of Algar,  10km from Albir and situated near the small inland town of Callosa d'en Sarria.
The weather during the summer time around the Costa Blanca can be quite a shock for many people and to escape the heat, there is nothing better than to swim in the crystal clear waters of the algar, which whatever the weather, always stays very cool and is a great way to recharge the batteries whilst on holiday.
The site includes a refreshments area, toilets, a picnic area and a small camp site.
A family holiday to the Costa Blanca does not need to be just sun, sea and sand. There is so much to do and see, and the list above is a tiny fraction of the things to do and places to go whilst visiting eastern Spain.

Holiday Activities in Javea for al year round.

Javea, known as Xabia in Valencian, is a pretty holiday resort town which has something for everyone. It is situated in a wide bay between the rocky headlands of the Cap de San Antoni and Cap de La Nao, both of which have their very own lighthouses. The bright blue Mediterranean Sea boarders Javea to the east and provides an abundance of rocky and sandy beaches as well as steep cliffs with spectacular viewpoints. Since the 1970's the cliffs of the two 'Caps' have become packed with villas, some of which have been built on unimaginable inclines. It has become a popular place for affluent northern European expatriates to purchase retirement villas and the town has an active expatriate flavour .

The historic centre is situated a few kilometres inland as its original inhabitants feared attacks from marauding pirates. The Church of Sant Bartomeu which dates back to the late 14th century is the centre piece of Javea's historic quarter and the narrow streets with their wrought iron balconies, large wooden front doors and stone porticoes add to its charm.
Places of interest and ideas of things to do in Javea / Xabia
  • Old Town: characterful streets to explore, includes tourist office, town hall, museums and 14th century church, a variety of art galleries, night clubs and abundance of restaurants.
  • Viewpoints: two impressive headlands with lighthouses and marked cliff top walking paths.
  • Marina: picturesque marina and fishing port.
  • Beaches: there are a number to choose from some are sandy whilst others are pebbly.
  • Market: large Thursday morning.
Ideas of places to twin Javea / Xabia with day or night
  • Spend the day in Javea. Start with a drive to the Cap de San Antoni for some stunning views out over Javea. Then drive down to the seafront and explore the marina and beaches stopping wherever you want for a menu del dia. Head to the historic quarter and get to know the quaint narrow streets of the original Javea.
  • Enjoy the large market on Thursday morning in the historical centre, purchase some fresh local produce for a picnic, and drive to the viewpoint at the Cap de la Nau for the ultimate panoramic picnic location!
  • Take a stop at any of the inland villages like Gata de Gorgos, famous for its locally produced wicker goods, or Ondara, with its impressive bullring, then head down to the beaches at Javea for a walk in the winter or a dip in the sea during the summer!
